Calafate Berry (Berberis Microphylla) Cold Hardy!
Calafate is a bush from southern Argentina and Chile that produces an antioxidant rich, sweet berry. Wild-harvested berries are used in pastries and jams. This fruit is typically enjoyed during the summer.
Calafate is a very versatile plant. Our specific strain of seeds are from the extreme south of Chile where the plants have months of snow-cover, and sometimes temperatures in single digits fahrenheit. It has potential as a landscape hedge, with beautiful yellow flowers. The plants are heavy fruit producers and self-pollinating. Interest is growing in Southern Chile for commercial production, as the available fruit never meets the demand.
